AFS runs in South Korea a school residence programme that involves staying at the school (a boarding school), usually from Monday to Friday and sometimes until Saturday. During weekends and holidays, students are hosted by local families so they can experience Korean culture in a domestic setting. Students are hosted by host families who will make them part of their daily lives, helping them to settle in and involving them in various activities.

AFS á Íslandi provides a preparation camp before departure (Undó) and a reorientation-camp (heimskom) where students can share their experience with volunteers and other exchange students.

As soon as the plane touches down in Korea, the students are catapulted into the magic of the capital, Seoul. The rudiments of Korean culture are provided, along with the students’ liaison contact details, during the first training session, which is organised on the day of arrival. Finally, before returning home, there is a final evaluation meeting scheduled in the capital.

During the programme, students will have the opportunity to meet with local liaisons on a monthly basis to discuss their experience and cultural integration. Additional optional activities may be organised during the programme, the cost of which is not included in the participation fee.

Each country may have different eligibility criteria for the students; you can find the general criteria here. Some AFS countries have stricter requirements for applicants than others, the main reason being that it can be difficult to find host families or schools.

For example, some countries prefer not to accept vegetarians, applicants with certain medical conditions, certain allergies, or students with special dietary requirements.

In South Korea, for instance, visible tattoos and piercings are not permitted in many public places, including schools, swimming pools and gyms.

We would prefer that these factors not prevent exchange programs, but at the same time we need to take into account local conditions in each country. You can contact our office to find out what are the specific criteria for the country you are interested in.
