These are some of the project areas in which community service participants can develop their volunteering activities in Colombia: -Teaching assistance: English proficiency among the Colombian population is not very common yet, such as having contact with non-Spanish speaking persons. This is the reason why Colombian schools are highly interested in bringing intercultural experience into their classroom and improve the quality of English teaching. The institutions are mainly public schools (colegios) defrayed by the state or religious institutions. -Work with young children in local kindergardens: We offer an opportunity to work in a kindergarten in Colombia with children from vulnerable communities. Some are traditional kindergartens which receive young children aged from 2-5 years old. Others receive young children which come from difficult homes or that have suffered some kind of trauma due to violence or abuse. Participants will be working with the children and help to take care of them. Since the children may have trauma, you, as a volunteer, must be open to working with challenging situations. -Work with children and adults with special needs: AFS Colombia offers you an opportunity to work with adults and children with special needs and living at the same time an intercultural experience. To provide them with education, allowing them to become part of the social and cultural environment. The goal is to make them independent and self-sufficient in every single aspect of their lives. -Animal shelters: Just alone in Bogotá, capital of Colombia, live almost 1.000.000 dogs abandoned in the streets without anyone that cares about them. We need someone who loves animals, especially dogs and cats, to support local staff in their work with rehabilitation, rescue and recuperation of dogs which have been abandoned, abused or at risk. -Work with orphans: We give many different options of working with orphaned children, foundations that try to give these children another place to stay and live far from the street and dangerous influences. The children come from different families in dangerous situations and might need psychological help or a good friend to help them work with their self-esteem and confidence. -Environmental projects: We offer environmental projects in different areas: astronomical observatories, conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, rural tourism communities led by women, amongst others. Depending on the participants’ particular interests we can offer the placement. Most of the projects are located in the departments of Meta, Boyacá and Cauca.
