The AFS Costa Rica Community Service Program is designed to provide participants with an opportunity to live with a Costa Rican host family, learn about the language and culture and contribute to the wellbeing of a community as a volunteer in a local non-profit organization. Each participant of the program will be placed with a volunteer (non-paid) host family and integrated in the activities of a local community service organization. All AFS international volunteers are expected to actively participate in the normal daily tasks of their hosting organization, to complete all work assigned and show continuous effort throughout their program to achieve their fullest potential. Families and community service organizations expect that the international volunteer they agree to host is coming on this program to commit in his volunteer responsibilities and to become a full member of their family and their community. The program includes a sequence of educational orientations, interacting and sharing experiences with other international volunteers. Each participant will be assigned to a local volunteer chapter that will give him/her support throughout the program.
