During their exchange program with AFS, students will live in a host family, attend a local school and therefore experience a foreign culture up close. AFS á Íslandi provides a preparation camp before departure (Undó) and a reorientation-camp (heimskom) where students can share their experience with volunteers and other exchange students.
The first camp in South Africa will take place in Johannesburg when the participants arrive, before they are welcomed into their host families. During this meeting, the students will focus on adjusting to the local culture and the details of their programme, and they will receive information on health and safety rules. Throughout the year, a mid-stay camp will be arranged locally to evaluate the ongoing experience and facilitate reflection on the adaptation process, guided by local volunteers. A final meeting is scheduled a few days before departure, during which students reflect on the value of their experience and prepare for returning home.
Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to take part in various volunteer activities, which will help them to understand the concepts of Ubuntu (‘humanity towards others’) and sustainable development, both of which are fundamental to many cultures on the African continent.
Other events and recreational activities may be organised for the students and their host families during the programs, and the participants may be asked to cover the costs as they are not included in the participation fee.
Each student will be assigned a liaison to accompany them throughout their journey, helping them to understand the local reality and overcome difficulties in cultural adjustment.
