FAQ

Yes, in several ways: you make a difference on the spot, but you also learn yourself.

All projects you can volunteer with AFS are institutions, NGOs, national parks or similar that already exist and do their work independently of you, but could use extra hands. This means that your work is not replacing a workforce or fulfilling a non-existent need; you are adding value.

It could be a kindergarten for vulnerable children, a local organization that works to support young people, a small local community that would like help to improve their English in order to attract more tourists, a national park that could use more data that you, as a volunteer, collect.

At the same time, when you go on a volunteer program abroad, you become much more aware of a different reality than the one you come from. You learn about another culture in a very specific way, which makes you a more responsible global citizen .

You won’t save the world with an AFS stay, but you will do something good for at least one other person you would otherwise never meet, and you will contribute to the AFS purpose of creating more peace through intercultural understanding.
